Children in the Pre-Prep enjoy participating in a broad range of clubs. These include Ballet, Dance, Choir, ICT and Small World Play to name just a few. The synopsis below gives you a flavour of some of the activities offered to the children.
Children from Nursery onwards can learn ballet as an after school activity with a fully qualified Ballet teacher. They practise poise, musical interpretation and group pieces, which contribute to a performance at the annual Summer Entertainment for parents. From Years 1 and 2, they are able to prepare for formal examinations which they can continue in the Prep School.
The children in running club enjoy running in all weathers (sun, rain and snow!) on the school playing fields. The importance of pacing ourselves and good running posture are taught through fun games and exercises. A number of the children participate in the Rawlinson Run, a local cross-country event against other schools.
Story and Picture club
The idea is to listen to and discuss a story. We talk about the characters and story setting, and discuss what is real, not real, likely to happen next etc in a bid to raise literary awareness! Then we choose a scene, or character or story specific object to draw and perhaps label. The children take home a folder of their efforts at the end of term.
This depends largely on the weather and takes place outside whenever possible. The focus has been on seasonal changes and discovering what flora, fauna and creatures can be found within the school environment. Children observe and comment, collect, draw and make things accordingly.
The gardening club have had lots of fun harvesting tomatoes and beetroot, weeding, finding worms, planting bulbs and pansies and generally making a mess!
Taekwondo The ever popular Taekwondo Club is very busy this term. We have several new members and some other children have purchased their outfits and look very smart. The children have been learning their bully drills and we will be learning what to do if a stranger approaches them soon.
This club was established following a request from the Pre-Prep children via the School Council forum. Such is its popularity that there are two sessions in order to accommodate the number of children who are keen to take part. The children learn a wide variety of songs with a strong emphasis on accompanying actions and movement. It provides an excellent starting point to their musical performance career in preparation for the Prep School Choir and annual drama production.
Lego Construction club
Our future generation of engineers trial their ideas for the future with the ever popular Lego construction kit. Each week we have a theme such as towns, zoos, tallest towers, strongest bridges or airports. All budding architects welcome.
This regularly over-subscribed club is run by our Dance Teacher, Mrs. Little. The children explore a variety of different dance styles over the year. Their performance at the Summer Entertainment is always an eagerly anticipated event!
